Victoria has experienced its worst drought and lowest stream flows in history.

A 12-year drought over much of south-eastern Australia has deprived Melbourne of three years of average rainfall and left its water storages desperately low. Melbourne's water storages are currently less than 30% full.

In response to Victoria's water crisis, the State Government’s Water Plan combines a range of projects to save, recycle, distribute and create water.

The Victorian Desalination Project is a key part of the Water Plan. It will deliver the largest desalination plant in Australia, capable of supplying up to 150 billion litres of water a year – a third of Melbourne’s annual water needs – with capability to expand to 200 billion litres a year in the future.
